Summary:Results are presented from a collaborative program that assessed the chemistry of contaminated sediments from Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong, and from Xiamen Harbor, China. All sediment samples were analyzed for non-aromatic hydrocarbons, long-chain linear alkybenzenes, PAHs, hexachlorocyclohexanes, DDTs, and PCBs. In Xiamen Harbor, concentrations of non-aromatic hydrocarbons, PAH, hexachlorocyclohexanes, DDTs, and PCBs ranged 3.1 32.9 mu g/g, 2.9 61 mu g/g, 0.14 1.12 ng/g, 4.45 311 ng/g, and 0.05 7.24 ng/g, respectively. In Victoria Harbor, the respective concentrations ranged 60 646 mu g/g, 1.2 14 mu g/g, 0 2.3 ng/g, 1.38 30.3 ng/g, and 3.2 16 ng/g. The general distribution pattern of the organic pollutants reflected the pollutant discharge from industrial and urban sources in both harbors.
