Summary: | Davidson (1988) noted that the frequency of dominances differed significantly among species with respect to the diversity of epiphytes on ant gardens, and that there were significant interspecific differences in occurrence in relation to nest size, nest substrate condition, and species of ant occupying the nest. Floristic composition of ant gardens in central Belezean orange orchards appeared to involve some partitioning according to substrate age as predicted by Davidson's (1988) results, but involved an entirely different group of ant-garden epiphytes. The purpose of the work reported here was to further explore this possibility by quantitatively determining the significance and nature of effects of variation in substrate age, as reflected by nest size, on the epiphyte composition of Belezean ant gardens. The orange orchards utilized in this study were located 1.1, 1.5, 4.5, 5.7, and 9.5 km east of Middlesex, 15 degree 07'N, 89 degree 40'W double prime , Stann Creek District, Belize. |
