Summary:A 28-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of pain and swelling of the left leg. He had a 21-year history of type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and had suffered from diabetic complications - retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy - for many years. The pain had begun so abruptly that he could remember the precise time of onset of symptoms. He denied any history of trauma, episode of coma, or recent injection into the leg.
