Description
Summary:In our experiments we have used a laboratory model fish, the rosy barb ( Barbus conchonius), for hybridization with carp ( Cyprinus carpio). We have produced reciprocal hybrids of the two species of which only carp female with barb male progenies are viable. Adult hybrids were analysed for morphological traits and biochemical markers. Analysis of chromosomes and erythrocytes demonstrated that crossing of farmed common carp with rosy barb resulted in hybrids having 75 intermediate chromosomes. On the other hand, crossing of koi carp with rosy barb produced triploid hybrids with 125 chromosomes. These differences were clearly manifested in the phenotype. Both hybrids proved to be sterile at the age of 1 year. A few new and surprising results were gained: linear scaliness inheritance in hybrids, a phenotypic difference depending on diploidy-triploidy, and the appearance of veil fins. These investigations may contribute to understanding the genetic structure of carp for application in both fish farming and genetic research.
