Summary: | Samples from 7 lakes were enriched with vanadium and studied for changes in photosynthetic rates. In 6 of the 7 lakes photosynthetic rates decreased as a linear function of added vanadium concentration but vanadium did not inhibit phytoplankton photosynthesis in the seventh lake. Univariate and multivariate analysis was used to evaluate the influence of phosphorus availability, phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic composition on the response to vanadium. Only lakes with a high proportion of cyanobacteria, high phytoplankton and a low proportion of Bacillariophyta and Chrysophyta were particularly vulnerable to photosynthetic inhibition by vanadium. Dissolved vanadium above the detection limit was only found in Hamilton harbour, Ontario lake and inshore areas of Erie lake. There are 34 references. |
