Description
Summary:This Special Issue continues the long tradition of showcasing some of the work presented at the biennial International Medical Geography Symposium which, in 2011, was held at Durham University, UK. As the latest in a conference series which has been running for more than 25 years, the Durham meeting offered an opportunity to reflect on changing directions in medical and health geography and, in a plenary presentation, Clive Sabel and Graham Moon offered an enlightening analysis of the evolution of academic health geography and the history of the symposium since its inception in 1985. Maps of the geographical origins of delegates for 2011 and 1985 were instructive in showing a greater inclusivity of participants from more of continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia at the Durham event but there is clearly more work to be done to encourage and enable the attendance of more participants from the global South. It is particularly notable that only one paper in this Special Issue is based on work located geographically outside of a core North AmericaUK/EuropeNew Zealand nexus. There is, however, an impressive body of work on the geographies of health and well-being of indigenous peoples and this is illustrated in the contributions to this collection.
