Description
Summary:Adult sea urchins (Arbacia punctulata) were exposed to 100 ppb cadmium for 14 d and the effects on spermatogenesis and oogenesis were studied. Eggs and sperm from exposed and unexposed urchins were collected and the sex products were mixed to give 4 treatment groups: male and female exposed; male exposed and female unexposed; male unexposed and female exposed; and male and female unexposed. Subsamples of eggs/larvae were collected at 3 sampling times (4-6, 24 and 48 h) and scored for normal development. Exposure to cadmium affected larval development at 4-6 and 48 h relative to controls but not at 24 h. Male gametes were affected more than females.
