Summary: | The anaerobic reduction of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) to 2,4-diaminotoluene (DAT) was studied in an anaerobic respirometer using ethanol, methanol, acetic acid or hydrogen as primary substrates. No biotransformation occurred in the absence of a primary substrate. The reduction pathway involved 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene or 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene. The rate of DNT reduction was greatest with ethanol as the primary substrate. When hydrogen was the primary substrate, cultures produced in an ethanol-enriched environment gave the fastest reduction rates compared with methanol- and acetate-enriched cultures. DNT was not completely transformed to DAT unless enough ethanol was initially added to produce at least twice the hydrogen stoichiometrically needed for the process. A high concentration of ethanol accelerated the reduction. DNT and the amino-nitrotoluenes inhibited the methanogenesis of methanol, acetate and hydrogen. |
