Description
Summary:In this paper, the challenges of using Particle Image Velocimetry as a diagnostic tool for confined swirling flows are discussed. To highlight these challenges, results from a PIV experiment are compared to a pair of analytical models. While there is generally good qualitative agreement, the velocity measurements degrade in the core of the vortex. Techniques to mitigate the reduced fidelity in this region will be explored and alternative visualization methods will be presented.
