Summary:Ecological fish production in one parapotamal arm of the Middle Danube inland delta in Slovakia was studied. Results of 10 samplings over 5 consecutive years showed total production (P sub(T)) to range from 349 kg ha super(-1) to 3,272 kg ha super(-1) and available production to range from 39 kg ha super(-1) to 662 kg ha super(-1). Young-of-the-year fish accounted for an estimated 49-62% of total fish produced. The food production/food consumption budget was calculated and showed less than half of P sub(T) to be of autochthonous origin; most derives from other sources. Conclusions included that ecological fish production in rivers fluctuates considerably; the hydrological regime is the primary factor influencing such production in floodplain rivers; and sampling must occur in different seasons and years if results are to be representative.
