Description
Summary:In health care, we are slow in implementing research to practice. It has been proven in research that exercise is important to the seniors. Do we put it into practice? No! It seems that exercise program is not being emphasized in most long term care settings. Frequently, seniors are left sitting in a wheelchair or a chair all day. Lack of staff and work load have always been the reasons. Exercise program, emphasizing on balance, increasing muscle strength through using weights is lacking. This presentation will demonstrate how 2 different long term care facilities (residents living in the facility) and 2 adult day programs (clients living at home) implemented the strength training program and the results: The program components including the goal and objectives, the funding and staffing requirement, the types of equipment, exercise program design and the evaluation methods including the collection of performance indicators will be presented. The impact of the program on the quality of life for the residents and the sustainability of the program will be discussed.
