The Tadpole of Physalaemus santafecinus, with Comments on Buccopharyngeal Morphology
Of the 38 species in the genus Physalaemus (Duellman, 1993; Lobo, 1993), the tadpoles of 13 have been described. Argentine species in the Physalaemus biligonigerus group include P. biligonigerus, P. nattereri, and P. santafecinus. Larvae of the first two species have been described by Vizzotto (1967...

Summary: | Of the 38 species in the genus Physalaemus (Duellman, 1993; Lobo, 1993), the tadpoles of 13 have been described. Argentine species in the Physalaemus biligonigerus group include P. biligonigerus, P. nattereri, and P. santafecinus. Larvae of the first two species have been described by Vizzotto (1967) and Fernandez and Fernandez (1921) respectively. We present data on the external morphology and buccopharyngeal features of the tadpole of Physalaemus santafecinus and provide comparisons with the larvae of the other species of the P. biligonigerus group. Ten tadpoles in Stages 35-40 (Gosner, 1960) were collected in humid shrub forest of the chacoan region near Corrientes, Argentina. |
