A tetracyclic thiophene trimer synthesis and mechanism of formation

Under strong acidic conditions, 2,5-dimethylthiophene forms a tetracyclic trimer almost quantitatively whose peculiar structure could be elucidated by X-ray analysis. In addition, by means of quantum mechanical calculations, a sound mechanistic picture of the reaction pathway is proposed.
