Description
Summary:Naonella is endemic to New Zealand with only one described species, Naonella forsythi Boothroyd, commonly found in streams and rivers throughout the country. A second species of Naonella, N. kimihia n. sp., found predominantly within lentic environments is described here. Adult male imagos of N. kimihia are larger than those of N. forsythi and can also be distinguished by the larger antennal ratio of N. kimihia. Pupae of N. kimihia can be distinguished from N. forsythi by their larger size and lack of lateral setae on abdominal segments, whilst a higher antennal ratio and a mentum with extended median tooth separates the larvae of N. kimihia from those of N. forsythi. N. kimihia has been recorded from lowland and upland lakes in both the North and South Islands.
