Summary: | David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister (1948-63, except for a short period) and the major figure in shaping IsraeU political identity, worked out "status quo" arrangements with the reUgious parties in an attempt to reach a compromise between the reUgious and secular Jewish communities. Conflicts over keeping shopping centers open on the Sabbath (Saturday), the importation of nonkosher foodstuffs such as pork, the sale of forbidden leavened food (hametz) during Passover, the introduction of civil marriages, and legaUzmg the status of homosexuals- all of these highUght the severity of the reUgious-secular divide in Israel at the beginning of the twenty-first century.3 Undoubtedly, the major threat to the stabUity of the democratic regime in Israel, against the background of this conflict between reUgion and state, derives from the close connection between reUgious and normative (i.e., socio-economic) poUtical cleavages within the Jewish population. |
