description | Wells et al. (1998) edited a book on microscale testing in aquatic toxicology that presented an overview of bioassay techniques, applications, and recent advances. Test procedures featured small organisms from both the plant and animal kingdoms. Also included were biochemical and tissue culture bioassays. The proceedings of the ninth international symposium of responses of marine organisms to pollutants was edited by Goksoeyr (1998). Papers and abstracts were presented in 10 different topics, some of which were reproductive toxicity and development, cellular culture and pathology, oxidative stress, metallothionein and metals, genotoxicity and immunotoxicity, and field studies and monitoring. The impacts of pollution on marine biotic communities were described as seven case studies, including the New York Bight, Chesapeake Bay, Southern California, San Francisco Bay, and Puget Sound from the U.S. Two cases were described from Tees Estuary in the U.K. and the Wadden Sea in The Netherlands. The second edition to the introduction to environmental toxicology was written by Landis and Yu (1998). New material includes sections on multispecies toxicity tests, biomarkers, and endocrine disrupters. Zilberberg (1998) compiled a dictionary of marine pollution terms. This compilation contains terms in the fields of the shore, ship, and legal aspects of marine pollution. |
