Summary: | This article presents the story of how a group of operations management students were introduced to Six Sigma's project management framework -- the define, measure, analyze, improve and control (DMAIC) method -- through experiential learning in a 15-week operations management course in which they evaluated the process of academic advising at State University of New York at Fredonia Experiential learning has been found to engage students with the curriculum and enhance their understanding of complex ideas, while academic advising has been found to play a significant rote in collegiate retention and graduation. With limited time, limited data and limited resources, the researchers attempted to characterize the phases of DMAIC with select quality applications that could lead not only to improving the academic advising process, but also to advancing their understanding of quality operations while engaging them with the larger quality community. The emphasis of this project was on the design, measure and analyze phases, with a focus on making recommendations only in terms of improve and control. |
