Description
Summary:The Southern California Bight extends from Point Conception at the northern end to Cabo Colnett, Baja California, in the south, and is bounded to the west by the California Current. An assessment is provided of the environmental quality of the Bight and the environmental problems that must be addressed. Extensive data are provided on the physical and biological setting, the biogeographic provinces and habitats, the effects of human activities and anthropogenic inputs, and the distribution and fate of these anthropogenic inputs, focusing on the effects on kelp beds, benthos, commercial fisheries, recreational fisheries, fish and fish communities, birds, and marine mammals. The human-health concerns of continued contamination of the Southern California Bight are also considered, and efforts to enhance the management of the Bight are discussed.
