Description
Summary:Highlights • The link between Helicobacter pylori and stomach cancer was first reported in 1991. • 9 out of 10 non-cardia gastric cancers worldwide are attributed to H. pylori infection. • Since then treatment of peptic ulcer disease incorporates the use of a proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics. • A decline in the prevalence of H. pylori has been noted across time, with concomitant declines in peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. • A newly developed oral vaccine against H. pylori holds hope of being the third vaccine against a cancer causing infection.
