Summary:A two-position scheme that comprises a backscatter lidar and backscatter nephelometer for measurements of the geometric form factor is proposed. The parameters of the beam sensing depth in a scattering medium with overlap of the field of views within the medium, which are indicators of the extinction coefficient and the geometry of the scheme, are considered. The nephelometer mode is optimal for measurements of the extinction coefficient. With the use of a complete set of indicators, it becomes possible to estimate the precision of measurements of the extinction coefficient within a layer.
