Summary: | Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) is the masterpiece of the Cuban director Tomás
Gutiérrez Alea. It concerns the seduction of a teenage girl, Elena, by a 38-year-old
man, Sergio. Sergio is a bourgeois intellectual trying to make sense of the changes
in his life, and that of the country, following the self-exile of his family after the
failed Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961. With reference
to the theories of R. W. Connell,
Johan Galtung and Antonio Gramsci this article proposes an interpretation of Sergio
which is more nuanced and less negative in comparison with previous critical analyses
