Summary: | Nitrogen oxides and nitrous oxides emissions were characterized during the combustion of semi-dried sewage sludge in a semi-pilot scale fluidized bed combustor (FBC) and in a large-scale FBC incineration plant. The semi-dried material exhibits emission characteristics similar to those of wet sludge. NO sub(x) emissions decline slightly while N sub(2)O emissions remain stable with an increase in oxygen concentrations. Staged combustion did not prove effective in reducing emissions of either species, but an increase in freeboard temperature led to rapid emission reductions. |
