Description
Summary:•Coating damage and delamination after aging of electrodeposition layer was obtained.•Stone Chipping resistance of the coating was evaluated by electrochemical studies.•Number and nature of damages were evaluated by electrochemical technique.•New parameters were defined based on Bode results to evaluate chipping degree. The main objective of this study is to investigate the nature and intensity of the failures produced on an automotive coating system after stone chipping test by an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The extent of coating damage and delamination were calculated based on various data i.e. impedance at low frequency, phase angle at high frequency and areas under Bode modulus plots. There was good correlation between the results of image processing and the parameters extracted from EIS analysis for the estimation of coating damage index and coating delamination extent from the substrate after chipping test.
