Description
Summary:[Display omitted] •Schistosomiasis is a dangerous trematode infection which causes subtle morbidity in children and severe morbidity in adults.•The drug praziquantel has proved to be a safe and effective drug against schistosomiasis.•Treating generations of children will protect them from severe consequences.•Consequences include bladder fibrosis, bladder cancer, and hepatosplenomegaly in later life.•Despite the target of elimination of transmission by 2020, a more realistic target will be 2030. Schistosomiasis has been a public health burden in a number of countries across the globe for centuries and probably beyond. The World Health Organization and partners are currently preparing to move towards elimination of this disease. However, given the historical challenges and barriers to ridding areas of this water-borne parasite infection, we question whether the current targets for eliminating schistosomiasis as a global health problem can be achieved.
