Summary: | This special issue is an outgrowth of a project managed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) for the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), Program Element No. 0603716D, of the US Department of Defense and carried out from November 1993 through September 1994. The participants carried out a preliminary study of the technical feasibility, economic viability, and environmental impact of isolating sewage sludge, fly ash from municipal incinerators, and contaminated dredged material on the abyssal seafloor. The findings, results, conclusions, and recommendations of the SERDP project team have been reported elsewhere in NRL memorandum and contractor reports and in conference proceedings. This special issue has provided the means for a number of SERDP project participants to refine their contributions and submit these to peer review of scientists and engineers not participating in the SERDP project. This special issue presents an interdisciplinary set of papers assessing viability of the abyssal seafloor concept for environmental isolation of selected wastes. |
