Description
Summary:The possibility that the continuation of present levels of nitrogen deposition in southeastern Canada could undermine the environmental benefits expected from control of sulphur dioxide emissions was assessed. Particular attention was given to lakes in south-central Ontario and south-western Quebec. Regional median nitrate levels were generally low, suggesting that nitrogen-based acidification was, on average, minor compared with the sulphur-based component but the seasonal nitrate pattern in 2 basins showed incipient nitrogen saturation. Survey data were classified to identify cases of nitrate leaching. Nitrogen sources other than the atmosphere should be considered for some anomalous cases.
