Summary: | Er super(3+) and Yb super(3+) doped cubic elpasolite Cs sub(2)NaYF sub(6) crystals including stoichiometric compositions Cs sub(2)NaErF sub(6) and Cs sub(2)NaYbF sub(6) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Absorption, stimulated-emission and gain cross-sections spectra have been determined for the super(2)F sub(5/2 arrow right ) super(2)F sub(7/2) (Yb super(3+)) and super(4)I sub(13/2 arrow right ) super(4)I sub(15/2) (Er super(3+)) transitions at room-temperature. The maximum sigma sub(SE) values are 1.810 super(-21) cm super(2) at 993 nm (Yb super(3+)) and 3.810 super(-21) cm super(2) at 1535 nm (Er super(3+)). Elpasolite crystals provide exceptionally long radiative lifetimes of the excited-states for both ions, namely tau ( super(2)F sub(5/2))=6.3 ms and tau ( super(4)I sub(13/2)) ~32 ms for 10 at% Yb super(3+):Cs sub(2)NaYF sub(6) and 10 at% Er super(3+):Cs sub(2)NaYF sub(6) which can be used in high pulse energy Q-switched lasers. Up-conversion luminescence has been studied for Er super(3+) doped and Er super(3+), Yb super(3+) codoped Cs sub(2)NaYF sub(6) crystals. |
