Summary: | The input of nitrogen to the Baltic sea from its catchment via atmospheric deposition was estimated. The deposition of nitrogen compounds on the catchment was five times as high as the quantity entering the Baltic sea directly. Two calculation methods, direct and indirect, yielded reasonably similar input estimates. The major source of data uncertainty was related to the values of nitrogen runoff and retention in different categories of land use. For the whole Baltic basin in the period 1987 to 1991 runoff values of 8-10 per cent of the total amount of atmospheric nitrogen deposition input to the basin, estimated at 1341-1401 kt, were calculated. |
