Description
Summary:Surface zooplankton samples were collected at four different locations covering the coastal waters of Qatar, and concentrations of trace metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, and PAHs were determined. The study was conducted during the winter and summer of 1998. Highest levels of all metals, except for lead, were noted in copepods collected near the Messaieed Industrial Area, while Pb levels were highest in copepods collected from Doha Harbor. Overall, highly contaminated copepods were found in areas impacted continuously by industrial outfalls or oil activities. Oil contamination of the animals was restricted to the southeastern coast, with total petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in copepods ranging 3.3 66.2 and 10.4 135.5 mu g/g during winter and summer, respectively. Highest levels of PAHs, which were dominated by low-molecular-weight compounds, were recorded in copepods collected near the Messaieed Industrial Area and from Doha Harbor.
