Derivation of precipitable water from METEOR and NOAA infrared window measurements
This presentation describes the procedures for inferring the precipitable water content (PW) from cloud free infrared radiance observations in the atmospheric window 10.5 – 12.5 μm provided by the METEOR - 3 instrument (single channel) and by the NOAA radiometer AVHRR (two split-window channels). Summary: | This presentation describes the procedures for inferring the precipitable water content (PW) from cloud free infrared radiance observations in the atmospheric window 10.5 – 12.5 μm provided by the METEOR - 3 instrument (single channel) and by the NOAA radiometer AVHRR (two split-window channels). Two types of algorithms for PW retrieval over sea from both kinds of satellite data have been proposed. The first algorithm utilizes the parametric model of satellite measurements and best linear estimator; the second one is based on statistical regression. Verification of remote sensed PW against collocated analysis data gives RMS errors in the range 0.55 – 0.70 cm (0.54 – 0.62 cm) for single - channel (two - channel) methods. The problem of PW retrieval over land with varying surface temperatures and emissivities is under discussion. |
