Summary: | Results are presented from a comparison of estimates of forest biomass in the Brazilian Amazon. Seven estimates were considered, three that were based on ground measurements, two that were based on relationships between aboveground biomass and environmental parameters, and two that were based on satellite data. Each estimate is presented in detail. The differences among estimates were attributed, at least in part, to differences between actual and potential biomass, and the extent to which nonforested lands were considered in the approaches also accounted for some of the variability. Overall, the estimates varied by more than a factor of two. |
