Copper-influenced changes in lactate dehydrogenase and G-6-PDH activities of the freshwater teleost, Labeo rohita

Labeo rohita were exposed to acute and subacute concentrations of copper, and effects on lactate dehydrogenase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) activities in gill, liver, brain, and muscle were examined. Upon exposure to a lethal concentration, lactate dehydrogenase and G-6-PDH activi...

description Labeo rohita were exposed to acute and subacute concentrations of copper, and effects on lactate dehydrogenase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) activities in gill, liver, brain, and muscle were examined. Upon exposure to a lethal concentration, lactate dehydrogenase and G-6-PDH activities were increased and decreased, respectively, significantly in all tissues examined. Behavioral changes were also observed, such as irritability, irregular erratic swimming and jumping, restlessness, coagulated mucus film covering over gill epithelium, shrinkage in epithelium, and color changes. At sublethal Cu concentrations, lactate dehydrogenase activity was increased less dramatically, and G-6-PDH activity was increased. As sublethal exposure duration increased, enzyme activities recovered to near-normal states, indicating the activation of metal detoxification and elimination pathways.
