Description
Summary:The general monsoon circulation evolved in a relatively normal fashion over most of the globe during June-August 1990. Nonetheless, dry conditions returned to sub-Saharan West Africa (10 degree -20 degree N). After two years of near-average rainfall, relative to the last 50 years, this region experienced its second driest April-October since the record drought years of 1983-84. This was the eighth driest April-October period in at least the past half-century. The remainder of the Northern Hemisphere summer monsoon regions experienced mixed seasons, with the Indian summer monsoon rainfall appearing to be about normal overall. The summer monsoon season in China started with excessive rainfall amounts, but closed dry in southern areas. Dry conditions also prevailed in the southeastern United States and over most of western Europe.
