Summary: | Data collected by the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy Experiment were used to analyze mechanisms underlying the heterogeneous removal of dinitrogen pentoxide by sulfuric acid aerosols. A gas-phase photochemical model overestimated the amount of dinitrogen pentoxide present, and the loss of this species by aerosols appears to be slower than previously considered. The data are consistent with some heterogeneous conversion of dinitrogen pentoxide to nitric acid occurring on sulfate aerosols. |
