Preparation of Organic Nitrates from Alcohols and N sub(2)O sub(5) for Species Identification in Atmospheric Samples

The laboratory synthesis of mono- and bifunctional organic nitrates from the reaction of alcohols and dinitrogen pentoxide is described. The preparation of the organic nitrates was performed in an all-glass vacuum line with Teflon stopcocks to which three traps for N sub(2)O sub(5), alcohol, and the...

Description
Summary:The laboratory synthesis of mono- and bifunctional organic nitrates from the reaction of alcohols and dinitrogen pentoxide is described. The preparation of the organic nitrates was performed in an all-glass vacuum line with Teflon stopcocks to which three traps for N sub(2)O sub(5), alcohol, and the reaction products were attached. The experimental preparation of the organic nitrate products and the gas chromatographic analyses are described. Reaction yields were determined for methyl nitrate, ethyl nitrate, 2-propyl nitrate, 2-methyl-1-propyl nitrate, and nitrooxyacetone.
