Spatial Dynamics of Predation by Carabid Beetles: A Response to Mair et al. (2001)
Mair et al. (2001) reject the hypothesis of Bohan et al. (2000a) that predation by the carabid Pterostichus melanarius on the slugs Arion intermedius and Deroceras reticulatum was 'not opportunistic, but direct and dynamic'. They conclude that our findings reflected 'demographic featu...

Summary: | Mair et al. (2001) reject the hypothesis of Bohan et al. (2000a) that predation by the carabid Pterostichus melanarius on the slugs Arion intermedius and Deroceras reticulatum was 'not opportunistic, but direct and dynamic'. They conclude that our findings reflected 'demographic features such as egg distribution patterns, and that any congruence between spatial patterns of beetles and slugs was purely fortuitous or determined by environmental parameters with which both were correlated.' We believe this conclusion to be untenable. |
