Summary: | Passive microwave image data from the Defense Meteolological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) instrument have been analysed for diagnostic evidences of both rain-rate over parts of north-west Europe, calibrated by FRONTIERS radar, with good results down to rain-rates of 0.50 mm h
−1. Data from the same source and the Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), are being processed to provide historic (climatic) analyses of rainfall, over both local regions (e.g. the North Sea), and the whole world. Finally, analyses of SSM/I data are being undertaken to show their predictive value in weather forecasting, especially in relation to severe weather events. |
