Point-of-care ultrasound in pediatric small bowel obstruction: an ED case series

Description
Summary:A recent meta-analysis of imaging tests for SBO found ultrasonography performed by emergency medicine residents to be more accurate than plain radiography, CT, and magnetic resonance imaging, with a positive likelihood ratio of 9.55 and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.04 [2]. Integrating POCUS into the examination of children with abdominal pain and vomiting allowed the emergency physicians in these cases to detect features of SBO that might otherwise have been missed given the nonspecific nature of the symptoms and signs of these patients and led these providers to the diagnosis more rapidly than subsequent traditional imaging tests.
