Description
Summary:Linezolid is included in the World Health Organization's compilation of essential medications, especially as an option for the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis.12 Two unwanted features of linezolid deserve comment here; they may possibly be interrelated. A second property shared among these drugs (linezolid, isoniazid, iproniazid, and phenelzine) is their ability to inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase A. Although these agents vary in the magnitude of their inhibitory strength, they all can cause drug-drug and drug-food interactions by elevating levels of circulating monoamines such as tyramine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
