Summary: | The effect of different extracts of elder (Sambucus nigra L.) flowers on biochemical reactions in rats before and after CCl sub(4)-induced hepatotoxicity was examined. Administration of elder flowers impaired antioxidant defense mechanisms, particularly by depletion of liver glutathione (GSH) content and reduction of activities of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (Px). Rats treated with CCl sub(4) had an expected increase in lipid peroxidation (LP)and a decrease in glutathione reductase (GSH-R), CAT and Px activity. Pretreatment of the rats with elder flower extracts before treatment with CCl sub(4) amplified the CCl sub(4)-induced liver injury, increasing LP and reducing GSH content. Treatment with both CCl sub(4) and flower extracts significantly increased the serum transaminases: glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT). |
