Summary:We were on a palace rooftop in Nepal at five o'clock in the morning. The pagoda towers of Katmandu were shadows against the early mist, and the Himalayan foothills humped, silent and black, beyond the town. Suddenly, the sun cleft a golden space in the distant sky. And there was the sight we had risen to see-- the ice-glazed, sun-struck cliffs of Annapurna, like a bright mirage above the highest clouds.
