Summary: | In order to try to help her and understand what the voice had said, I naively replied, “Would it help to tell others, mainly me, by warning them of the event?” Although she decided against telling me what it was that the voice said, she was much more willing to talk to me about her schizophrenia after that. While I believed having casual conversations would gain her trust and develop good rapport, I was unaware that her mental illness would make it significantly more challenging for me to define my role with her and for her to truly understand it.
