Summary:Liver abscess is a rare and severe infection. Incidence increases because of aging of population, advances in liver and biliary surgery including liver transplantation, and immunodeficiency factors. Diagnosis depends mainly on imaging and needle aspiration for microbiological identification. Treatment is based on antibiotics, percutaneous or surgical drainage, and control of the primary source.
