Fracture of Hex Bars During Manufacture
A manufacturer of hex bars experienced occasional post heat treatment cracking. Metallography, SEM fractography, and microhardness testing demonstrated that quench cracking was the cause of failure. The manufacturer had the heat treatment modified in order to eliminate the cause of failure.
