Description
Summary:The use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is another promising approach, which leads to the intracellular accumulation of fluorescent porphyrins in malignant gliomas. [...]under violet-blue illumination, tumor tissue can be readily identified by the surgeon. When samples were analyzed from areas with MRI contrast enhancement, there was solid tumor in 39.3% and an infiltration zone in 25% of samples(2). [...]alternative techniques that will enable the discrimination between neoplastic and normal tissue are needed. Using REIMS, Balogetal. evaluated samples ex vivo from 1624 cancerous, 1231 healthy and 78 benign and inflammatory bowel disease specimens in order to construct a database of nearly 3000 tissue-specific mass spectra(6).
