Summary: | Highlights • Female sexual dysfunction and quality of life are both multidimensional and have a bidirectional relationship across the reproductive life span and beyond. • Methodological difficulties exist in estimating the real prevalence of female sexual dysfunction in epidemiological studies, mainly because it is hard to determine the level of distress associated with sexual symptoms. • Approximately 40–50% women, irrespective of age, report at least one sexual symptom. • Some conditions related to hormonal changes at menopause, such as vulvovaginal atrophy and hypoactive sexual desire disorder, have a significant impact on sexual function and quality of life. • Health care providers should proactively address sexual symptoms at midlife and in older women. Adequate counselling and tailored hormonal and non-hormonal therapies may be useful to relieve symptoms. |
