Description
Summary:Patients in cardiac rehabilitation suffering from diabetes mellitus belong to the group of patients at highest risk for new cardiovascular events and therefore require highly specialized rehabilitation programs. Changes in lifestyle are of great importance to control all relevant cardiovascular risk factors, and patients need to learn healthy lifestyle in special education programs. Furthermore, it is necessary to prepare patients for self-management of their disease in their daily life and work. Physicians should optimize pharmacological treatment in accordance with guidelines in order to minimize secondary end organ damage. To ensure long-term success of cardiac rehabilitation, reliable rehabilitation care should be initiated on discharge of the patient.
