Sodium and cardiovascular disease

In 1991, we showed2-4 that a 1 g per day decrease in sodium intake (2·5 g salt) reduced systolic blood pressure by 5 mm Hg at age 55 years, leading to an estimated 22% reduction in the incidence of stroke and 16% reduction in the incidence of myocardial infarction.
