Description
Summary:Four heterotrimetallic complexes, {[Cu(L)Pr(H sub(2)O) sub(4)][Fe(C N) sub(6)]} sub(2).[/ bold]2CH sub(3)OH.5H sub( 2)O (1), {[Cu(L)Nd(H sub(2)O) sub(4)][Fe(C N) sub(6)]} sub(2).[/ bold]CH sub(3)OH.6H sub(2 )O (2), {[Cu(L)Sm (H sub(2)O) sub(4)][Cr(CN) sub(6)].CH sub(3)OH.3H sub(2)O} sub(n) (3), and {[Cu(L)Gd(H sub(2)O) sub(3)][Fe(C N) sub(6)].CH sub(3)OH.0.5CH sub(3)CN.2H sub(2)O} sub(n)[4; L = N,N'-ethylenebis(3-methoxy salicylideneiminato) dianion] were synthesized by a self-assembly method and characterized structurally and magnetically. The results indicate that 1 and 2 are discrete hexanuclear clusters, whereas 3 and 4 form 1D regular chains and 2D networks, respectively. Interestingly, all of the structures possess the same structural inner core of Cu super(II)(L)-Ln super(III)-M super(III) units, which can produce a variety of different structural forms. Magnetic measurements reveal that weak d-f magnetic coupling and the single-ion magnetic effect of the Ln super(III) ions both contribute to the final magnetic behavior. Four new heterotrimetallic Cu super(II)(L)-Ln super(III)-M super(III) (M = Cr, Fe; Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) complexes were obtained. Interestingly, the Cu super(II)(L)-Ln super(III)-M super(III) unit forms new discrete hexanuclear clusters, 1D regular chains, and 2D networks, which were not found in related complexes of previous studies.
