ELEMENTAL CONCENTRATIONS OF FINE MODE AEROSOL IN THE TROPOPAUSE REGION
The mass concentration of the aerosol constituents in the tropopause region is not very well known. The scarce measurements available indicate that the particles are dominated by sulphuric acid (Sheridan et al., 1994). Sulphate aerosol plays an important role in climate change. Summary: | The mass concentration of the aerosol constituents in the tropopause region is not very well known. The scarce measurements available indicate that the particles are dominated by sulphuric acid (Sheridan et al., 1994). Sulphate aerosol plays an important role in climate change. The sulphate concentration in the upper troposphere is currently estimated by chemical transport models (Rodhe, 1999) and these estimations need validation from experimental data. Here we present the first systematic study of the upper tropospheric aerosol. The data were taken during intercontinental flights on a commercial aircraft. Aerosol samples were collected by impaction technique and the subsequent analysis was done with Particle-Induced X-ray Emission. |
